Tony's father has a number of different emotions. His dream was to move the family to California. Thus, Guadalupe didn't seem like a move in the right direction. He felt like he was moving away from his dream rather than toward it.

Gabriel was disappointed with the move to Guadalupe. He wanted to live on the llano, closer to his brothers and the vaqueros, but María wanted to live by the river so that she could have a small garden that reminded her of the farms. While the family lives on the edge of the llano, closer to town and the river, Gabriel isn’t satisfied with this. This is why he dreams of moving to California with his sons to regain some of the vaquero lifestyle that he had to give up.
