One night, Aunt Maggie and "uncle" move out in the middle of the night. From the bits of conversation the Richard is able to gather, he realizes that his "uncle" has killed somebody and must flee. Richard's mother warns him never to mention what he has seen and heard; otherwise "the white people would kill [him]." The family is destitute and poor.
