What effect did Richard mother's illness have on him?

Richard's mother's illness made him feel hopeless. He's terrified he cannot take care of her, takes menial jobs to help financially, but they can't make it. Richard wants nothing to do with the charity his neighbors offer the family, as taking what he considers handouts shames him. He writes a letter to his grandmother, and she comes to help them out.
