Beowulf dies so he does not become king. Still, if he were to have lived, he would have made a good king. He certainly paid his dues in epic hero school of "hard knocks. He has the kind of glory and respect behind him that the Geats and Vikings loved. He did a lot better at defending the village than Hrothgar was able to do. That counts for a lot in Viking society.
