why does Beowulf proclaim he will pursue the fight

Beowulf says that only he could defeat the dragon, and that in return, if he lived, he'd have his treasure.

"And this dragon's treasure, his gold

And everything hidden in that tower, will be mine

Or war will sweep me to a bitter death!"
