Why does beowulf let someone die ?

It is not completely understood why Beowulf allows Grendel to kill one of his men. Some critics suggest that Beowulf wanted to see how Grendel attacked so he could better battle Grendel, "mauled a man on his bench" and "bolted down his blood."
