Why do you believe the writers had the movie veer so sharply from the epic poem Beowulf?

I'm doing this assignment about the 2007 Beowulf film and I dont know this question.

This question calls for your opinion, there is no right or wrong answer. My opinion would be that they wanted to make the epic more appealing to modern audiences, to make more money...... in my opinion...... they failed.
