What are "the rings" which are spoken of in the prologue?

The “ring-giver” would be the king or overlord. The rings (arm-rings or neck-rings) are distributed to worthy warriors by the ring-giver for their courage and strength in battle. They are gifts of wealth for service and often priceless.
