The poem opens with a description of Shield Sheafson (Scyld Scefing), of whom the poet remarks "That was one good king." What qualities seem to be associated with good kingship, throughout the poem?

I think a love and loyalty for his people are considered good qualities. A fearsome warrior that knows when to fihght is another quality. Respect and reverence for the Gods is also a quality.
