Why was it harder for beowulf to kill grendel mother than grendel himself?

Grendel's mother was far stronger than her son. Beowulf's sword, Hrunting, which was given to him by Unferth, was useless in his fight against Grendel's mother. She also lived in at the bottom of a deep lake which was difficult to access.
