Heorot is described as a properous village, while Hrothgar's hall symbolizes the grandeur and wealth of his people. It is a place of diplomacy.
The swamp, in direct contrast to Heorot, is wild and unprotected. Grendel and his mother have no hall, no leadership, and must rely on their wits to feed themselves. There are no rules, no expectations..... simply a desire to survive.
