How do the guards demean the prisoners?

The guards do all kinds of nasty things to the prisoners. They, for example, had their neck fastened to the axle of a buckboard, while wearing iron clamps around the ankles and wrists. The guards also offered food to one prisoner while the other prisoners starved. If that prisoner accepted the food, he was shot.
