Notes to the Teacher

1. A major theme in Beloved is language and its power, and it's important to keep that in mind when it comes to some of the terms used in the book. In particular, n****r is used repeatedly. You may want to lead a discussion with the class about that word (and other derogatory terms that appear in the text); if you have decided that you will not use that word, even if you're citing the text verbatim, explain why, but tell students that you want them to consider the way it is used in the book (in the context of both history and characterization).
