Duke Senior has been banished from his court by his younger brother (who has usurped the throne). Duke Senior is in the forest of Arden taking refuge as so many other characters have done. Basically he is saying that the road less traveled makes us stronger in the end. Adversity teaches us much more than an easy life. Specifically he is talking about his false life in court where people, like his brother, played falsely. Duke Senior prefers the honesty that can be found in adversity as opposed to the deceit of comfort.
