how is Darl's and Addie's relationship?
Darl loves his mother, but he resents that his mother loves his younger brother most of all (the is confirmed in section 40). Darl is the more affectionate of the two boys, but cannot gain his mother's real love, at least not in the way he wants it. She sees him as an extension of his father........... of her "duty" to produce children for her husband. Anse wasn't Jewel's father, but rather the result of an affair and she sees him as a gift from God; she even goes so far as to call him her "salvation."
