My hands are clasped by my heart. I catch my mind wandering, reaching to pluck out familiar melodies from the Led Zeppelin emanating from the corner of my room. I bring my attention back to my breath. As I inhale, I lift my chest, arch my back, and reach up to gather the sunlight carelessly strewn across the ceiling. As I exhale, I expand, stretching my arms out and feeling each vertebrae as I ground my energy and effortlessly shift my weight to my right foot. I lift up against gravity and focus my gaze beyond the fingers of my rigid right hand to complete the warrior pose. I am invincible.
My relationship with Hatha yoga had a rough start. After spending twelve years hunched over a never-ending procession of books, I had stiff joints and acute idiopathic scoliosis. The chiropractor gave me three choices: yoga, swimming, or a metal brace. I had recently dyed my hair purple for the first time (but not the last, to my mother's chagrin) and I refused to renounce my hard-earned efforts by drenching my masterpiece in chlorine. So yoga it was.
