Looking to the Future

What led you to choose the area(s) of academic interest that you have listed in your application to the University of Michigan? If you are undecided, what areas are you most interested in, and why?


It seems as though every day since elementary school people have been asking me the same daunting question: "So, what do you want to do when you grow up?" While my creative mind continues to come up with a different idea for each day of the week, I haven't yet stumbled upon the perfect occupation for me. My sincere hope is that a liberal arts curriculum at the University of Michigan will help me gain this insight.

In the meantime, I plan to capitalize on my strengths and look in the direction of my strongest subject: English. I devoured books at a young age and have excelled in the area ever since I could first read. My friends are constantly handing me essays to edit, and many a Friday has been devoted to all-night Scrabble competitions. Of all the fields of English, journalism interests me the most-I eagerly anticipate being a first-time writer for the school newspaper this year. I love to not only state the facts, but also to let my voice run through every article. My hope is that I can present basic ideas in a way that forces the reader to look at issues from new angles.
