Who were the Old People? What does Mr. Wender say they must have been?

The "Old People" were basically us. They were people around before the "tribulation". There are stories of the Old People having strange machines like cars, tractors, planes...Mr. Wender says they must have been "magicians" if they could do even one-quarter of what people say they could.
