Life at Rivercourt

At first I just sat and watched, dreading the moment Susan would ask me to scream out numbers. But as promised, she gave me a little nudge and told me it was my turn to call. "B-7, B-7" I said in a timid voice, scared to speak any higher than a loud mumble. As I continued calling, the crowd was beginning to get agitated and yelled back at me in their older, shaky voices, "We can't hear you!" My first experience of volunteering at Rivercourt Residence was that I could not even call a simple game of Bingo.
When I moved to a new school in my sophomore year and heard that I needed to complete community service hours for a graduation requirement, I knew I wanted to find an elderly home to volunteer at. Growing up I had performed in dance recitals at nursing homes to entertain the residents. I loved seeing the happiness on their faces when I visited. It was not the dancing that they enjoyed or the music: it was the company that I was sharing. I was determined to replicate that bond, new school or no new school.
