In other words, how are we to judge, to perceive somebody, without making serious mistakes? aN OBVIOUS ILLUStration is GLOUCESTER who thaNKS EDMUND for saving his life, when actually he is a traitor.

Shakepeare uses a variety of ways to make the reader "see and perceive" his characters. At its core, the novel invites the reader see its character's mistakes. The perceptions are actually illusions. Shakespeare wanted you to question motives, and he wanted to expose the "traitorous" attributes of these historical figures. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.
