I think a lot of her musings are tinged with guilt but she understood the necessity for everything she did. Emily was born into the working class during the Great Depression. Emily's mother, being single, had few choices for her daughter. Mother was a single working woman which was not the norm at the time. Still, the common struggle between the two actually bring them closer together.
