5. What were the Fascists doing to the Jews in Budapest?

When the townspeople hear that the Fascists have come into power in Hungary, no one really worries until the Germans actually invade Hungary and arrive at Sighet itself. Even then, the Germans seem nice and friendly, at least until Passover, when the persecution of the Jews begins in full force.

The Jews is Budapest were being terrorized.

"The Jews of Budapest live in an atmosphere of fear and terror. Anti-Semetic acts take place every day, in the streets, on the trains. The Facists attack Jewish stores, synagogues. The situation is becoming very serious..."
