That institution is the court."

Atticus holds the court's authority as sacred. He desperately wants to believe that the court is the final recourse that sees men as equal. He asks the jurors to refrain from seeing this case through the lens of color and bigotry. He wants the jury to simply see Tom Robinson as man with equal rights as any other man.
