• The President refuses to hear the resident of Azabon.

• Sam is overcome by a hunger for power

• Sam's increasing power comes between him and those he can trust. He alienates the people closest to him.

• The President has placed friends in positions of power. They later become rivals.

• His Excellency, Chris and Ikem, once boyhood friends, struggle against each other for control.

• Ikem is suspended from his job because His Excellency believes he is siding with the agitators.

• Deportation and arrests

• Ikem is killed because he voices his opinion
