The home of the scholars is a place where the very brightest people in the society are sent. All people are given their "careers" very early in their lives and have no choice about which home they go to. The scholars is just one place for people to go. The main character in this novel wishes he had been sent there.

The Home of the Scholars is the source of all inventions, such as glass and the candle, the latter of which had only been discovered a hundred years ago, and Equality 7-2521 wants to join their investigations.
