Not being selfish isn't necessarily a virtue. Ann Rand argues that, “selfishness does not mean only to do things for one’s self, one may do things, affecting others, for his own pleasure or benefit." This is not immoral but the highest of morality”. Equality 7-2521 searches for intellectual independence, away from the maddening ignorant powers of the state. Only through being "selfish" can Equality 7-2521 discover electricity or learn about his individual identity.
