Animal Farm is a tale about animals rising up against their human oppressors with visions of a socialist utopia that ends up being an autocratic dystopia. Essentially the whole book is a political satire. Orwell wrote this as an allegory to the Stalin's rise to power before WW2. I'm really not sure where to begin because there is so much to write about. I'm going to link you with the GradeSaver themes page, it explains everything you want to know about this question. If I had to narrow it down to one theme, they all have to do with your query, I'd go with "The Soviet Union under Stalinism."
