Why did the farmers of Foxwood and Pinchfield spread the rumours that animals at Manor Farm were not getting along?

I was just wondering, and was interested as i am finding it hard to understand.

The other farmers spread rumors about problems on Animal Farm, so that their own animals wouldn't start to get ideas about rebellion.
