Your answer can be divided into three parts:

1- Identification

a) Give title and author of work .

b) Identify the speaker (speakers if a conversation) or narrator.

c) Describe the specific circumstances (Describe the specific circumstances i.e. from what part of the novel, play, the poem the extract has been taken. This should very briefly answer the questions: Where? And why?

2- Comment

This part of your essay should deal with the significance of the words and/ or the incidents contained in in the given passage to the work in general. Answer the question : what is the importance of this passage:

a)theme and /or themes

b) characters as theme-carriers:

i) theme involved in the passage

ii) if and how they throw light on the other characters in the novel, play, etc. c) The plot and its development (not the story) .

d) Method of narration if the extract is from a novel.

e) Details of setting, if present.

Plot : the arrangement of incidents from initial situation to complication and then to the final situation.

3- Stylistic devices: Stylistic devices ( present in the passage ) which may include any of the following:

a) Key words

b) Imagery

c) Symbols

d) Figures of speech

e) Myths

f) Sounds

g) Connotations of words

h) Verse form
