Pigs are basically the smartest animals in general and in the book. They gained the power because they had enough courage in the begining to begin the revolt against Mr. Jones.I feel that Napoleon was corrupt from the begining but just did not show it because he needed to gradually knock snowball off the farm so he could be the sole leader. They gained power because the other animals did not know any better.
