Mr Jones is a drunk and doesn't take care of the animals on the farm. In his drunkeness he forgets to feed them, he locks them in their pens, and he whips them when they protest poor treatment. He is incompetent, and that incompetence and consistant drunkeness is what allows the animals to chase he and his wife away from the farm.
