Orwell contrasts the two pigs because they are two very different characters. Snowball has a vision and a purpose. He is a strategist, and he uses his brain power for the animals' benefit. Snowball plays Trotsky to Napoleon's Lenin, and like Trotsky, he is successfully exiled.
