Orwell uses Old Major's speech to dampens the ideals of the other animals by explaining that historically revolutions aren't successful overnight. Old Major puts a large focus on the fact that their actions may not come to fruition until longe after their gone..... that it may be generations before success is realized. Through this speech, we see that Old Major's dream for the farm looks into the future rather than the present.
