I think that one of the techniques he uses is the constant stories and songs that people recite to remind them of better days. This is a reoccurring motif that gives people hope and memories to withstand the crushing poverty,

“Oh, for one of those hours of gladness, gone, alas, like our youth too soon” resound throughout the memoir. Frank later finds comfort in hearing Shakespeare, P. D. Wodehouse, and songs and poems read aloud by his friends and family.
