An interesting one to compare against might be the Jeffrey Archer fiction As the Crow Flies. At least for the parts about childhood, and I think the plots take place in somewhat similar time periods.

What about that movie with Tom Cruise where he is a poor immigrant who comes to America? CAn anyone remember what that is called? Isn't he Irish in that?
