Eva Smith approached the Brumley Women's Charity Organization for help, Mrs. Birling was a prominent member. Unfortunately, Eva Smith, who was pregnant, used the alias Mrs. Birling when attending the meeting at the club. Mrs. Birling was offended and made sure Eva's appeal for assistance was denied.

if u have the play in the book...

you would know that 1. mrs birling didn't help eva smith because eva is pregnant with eric and she is unmarried and back in the day usually women unmarried and pregnant don't get no money or help from the chartity which mrs birlings works is and as eva knew that erics surname was birling she went by mrs birlings name and she didn't know that she was being surved by mrs birling . mrs birling refused to help because she though she was making fun of her and she found it rude and she didnt help poor eva.

btw eva was raped by drunk eric ]

hope that helps i am currently studying this play so yeah :)

my brain :) LOL

Mrs Birling's part is possibly the most important because it was the last straw that really lead to Eva Smith's death. If she had acted differently then the story could have had a different ending.

After everyone had played their parts in the story, Eva was on the edge and had no where to go, no one to stick by her side and help her out.

This is when she chose to go to Mrs Birling and her charity. Eva used the name of Mrs Birling because of Eric (Birling) getting her pregnant, makes sense, but the real Mrs Birling was having none of it and refused from then on to help her. Eva tried to explain how her husband had gone but Mrs Birling was not sympathetic and just cast her aside.

This was it for Eva, she had nothing and no one to turn to. She felt death was the only place to go that was safe.

If Mrs Birling had said yes or overlooked the fake name, Eva could have gotten a place to stay or urgent money she needed to keep safe.
