We learn that all of the characters are dressed in evening clothes, and that they are having a celebration.

Edna, the maid, is in her late twenties.

Arthur Birling is heavy set, portentous, provincial in speech, and in his fifties.

Mrs. Birling is described as cold and superior to her husband in social position.

Sheila is pretty, excitedly happy, and in her early twenties.

Gerald is an attractive man about the town and around thirty.

Eric is in his mid-twenties and rather shy.
