Birling sees life very much in terms of a business model.  He believes “that a man has to make his own way – has to look after  himself –and his family too”. Birling sees the marriage between his daughter and Gerald  very much as a business model where both families could work together and profit by working “together -for lower  costs and higher prices.” For Birling this means wealthy factory owners will earn a profit on the backs poor people.
