How does the writer explore the theme of social responsibility in the play?

how does Mr Birling show social responsibility and how does Mrs Birling show hers in contrast to Shiela.

Responsibility is without doublt the main theme in the play. As the play progresses, the Inspector points out the need for each character to take on the responsibility for Eva's death in one way or another. The writer's aim is expose the need for each of us to look out for each other in a socially resposible way. His intention is to illustrate his characters' link to Eva, in the same way we are linked to each other as human beings.

In terms of our main characters, it is obvious that outside of Eva and possibly the Inspector, each of them belongs to the upper rungs of society. Mr. Birling is guilty of not taking care of his employees, Mrs. Birling picks and chooses her charitable acts, Sheila takes people for granted, Eric treats his pending fatherhood like a business transaction, and Gerald is simply thoughtless..... an almost engaged man triffling with a young girl before marriage.

All of these characters interacted with Eva over the course of a very short period of time, and each of them contributed to either demeaning, using, triffling with, or abandoning her in her time of need.
