Eric is obviously nervous. Eric asks for a drink—a request to which the Inspector agrees—and which Birling denies. Eric’s heavy drinking is now no secret, and the Inspector explains to Birling that Eric “needs a drink now just to see him through.” Eric is pretty forthcoming about his indiscretions. When his father questions him about the stolen money, Eric gets agitated and accuses Mr. Birling of being a bad father.
