Gerald questions whether there really was an Eva Smith who committed suicide, and even though everyone admitted something to do with a girl, there’s no evidence that it was the same girl in each instance. Gerald then says the Inspector could have shown everyone different photographs, and “Daisy Renton” and “Eva Smith” could be entirely separate people. Birling is hugely relieved, the kids are appalled, and Mrs. Birling still hasn't recovered. You would think they would have thought his idea to be crazy. Some people, none-the-less, will never take responsibility for their actions.
