One way Amos continues to face prejudice is within the church.

No matter how devotedly he loved the church or how faithfully he served it, he could call no pew his own but must sit with his family in the cold north gallery in the place reserved for Negroes. Accepted into communion as he had been, he must still dwell on the fringe though his heart was at the core.
