midlife crisis in
Whether Lester is going through a mid-life crisis or not is irrelevant. American Beauty demonstrates one man's journey to the realisation that life is about love and family, and that is more important than any material object could ever be. His 'new life' is a journey to happiness, and 'subsequently', whether he dies or not is also irrelevant because in the end he is happy, and that is all that he ever wanted.
