Doerr tells the story from a third-person (omniscient) point of view. Each of his main characters tells their story from a point of view which is both personal and all-knowing. The segments alternate from one point of view to another, ands as a result we are exposed to the thoughts of each character in turn. of the major characters in this story are known to the reader although never from 'I, me, my or mine' are not used. Doerr uses multiple viewpoints to provide background and change locations, as well as to expose the reader to the thoughts and rationales of both sides of the conflict.
