Why wouldn't Ginger open the kitchen and serve lunch? (Chapter 1)

Ginger has cooked for the men who've gone into combat (150), but when only 80 return he refuses to feed them on the premise they needed to wait for the others........ when an officer comes by he's told to FFED the men....... he does.
