I think Erich Maria Remarque's purpose for writing this book was to show the horrors and senseless slaughter of war. One of the major themes is that the soldiers had more in common with enemy soldiers than they did with their leaders or even civilians at home. The novel was also from a German point of view which is refreshing to most Western readers.
