Kat's death was also the emotional death of Paul. Kat was a father figure to Paul and his friends. Kat sustained Paul through the horrors of war. Kat's death, in many ways, symbolized the death of Paul himself. One wonders at the end of the story if Paul didn't welcome the final bullet that ended his life.
