What does Paul do when the French soldier stumbles into his shell hole?

Paul initially panics, but then he crawls toward the man trying to assess if he is alive. Once he sees the man is alive, he tries to calm him, provides him with some water, and attempts to bandage his wound. Paul does the best he can, and then he waits...... the man eventually dies.
