There quite a few lies that Kantorek (Paul's teacher) and other "adults" tell Paul and his friends about the war. Three include:

- The war will be a quick one

- The war is a chance to feel glory

-They will be happy to fight for the motherland

All turn out to be false. With the last one Paul finds that the soldiers are merely trying to fight for their own survival.
