How do Paul and the others know the English artillery has been strengthened?

I think that you are referring to chapter 6. The men can hear the British artillery and it sounds stronger. Paul thinks he can hear at least 4 more batteries of nine-inch guns to the right of the farm as well as trench-mortars behind the poplars.
